A few years ago most of my fishing was done with a classic all round pole float pattern like a Jean Francois or Jolly shaped float, this was until we had the World Club champs final selection match on our stretch of river at Littleport. This brought together some of the best teams in match fishing over 2 days to decide who went on to fish the WCC final in Europe. Obviously we spent hours watching these anglers who were fishing continental rules to see how they fared on our water and they emptied it, yes they used bloodworm and Joker but it was how they did it and the tackle we were interested in. We noticed that virtually all the anglers had the standard Jolly shaped floats set up but also lots of pencil floats as well, at the time we didn’t really use these at all. After speaking to a few decent anglers including a 5 times world champion it became obvious that we were missing out.

We then started trying various models of float but while they caught plenty of fish they were nearly always quite fragile especially when whip fishing.

I thought we could do better and the Pro Whip float was born. It’s made from a much harder balsa with super tough paint and the flexible stem does not split out from the base like many do after time. We have used these floats both on the long pole and whip ‘to hand’ and they have accounted for some big nets of fish.  Mainly fished with an olivette and droppers due to the depth of our river you can use them strung out as well on shallower venues. This is still my favourite whip float and they are still only £1.99.
